While we were staying at the inn I became quite ill. I was given less and less rest between the shows. I was too tired to eat properly much of the time and I soon lost weight and became extremely thin. I could see that the farmer was worried about me. I think he had decided to make as much money as he could before I died. A courtier from the royal palace came one day and ordered the farmer to bring me to Court. The Queen and her ladies wanted to see the show. Some of the Queen's ladies had already been to see me at the inn.

Her Majesty was delighted with my tricks (ее величество пришла в восторг от моих трюков). Afterwards she asked me some questions (после она задала мне несколько вопросов) about my own country and my travels (относительно моей родины и путешествий). I added that I felt sure I would soon recover my health as a servant of a great and good Queen, who was the Darling of the World and the Delight of her Subjects. (Glumdalclitch, on our way to the Court, had taught me some of the things she had heard the Queen's ladies say.)

Even the Queen's favourite dwarf, the smallest ever known in the kingdom, was nearly thirty feet high. After a long discussion, they decided that I was a quirk of nature.

It was possible, therefore, for a person of my size to defend himself and to make a living in his own country.

Glumdalclitch was provided with rooms at Court, a teacher and three maids. The Queen's own carpenter was told to make a bedroom for me, exactly the way I wanted it.

The board that was the ceiling lifted up and down on two hinges. Glumdalclitch lifted my bed out through the roof every day to air it. She put it back each evening and locked the roof. I had two chairs, two tables and a cupboard for my things. The smallest lock in the kingdom was made for this cupboard and I kept the key to this lock myself.

The Queen also ordered clothes for me (королева приказала также сделать мне одежду), to be made from the finest of silks (из самых тонких шелковых тканей). I must have talked too much about my own beloved country one particular Wednesday. The King laughed heartily, lifted me up on his hand and pointed a finger at me. Turning to his Minister, who stood behind him, he laughed again. What a foolish thing was human pride, he said, that it could be imitated by such small insects as this one on his hand. These creatures, he went on, have titles, dress in fancy clothes, build houses, love and fight, just like real people!

One day the Queen held me on her hand while she was looking in a mirror. I was able to see both of us at the same time and the difference in our sizes seemed so ridiculous! I really began to imagine I had grown smaller than my usual size. I could quite see that I might laugh if I suddenly saw a number of English lords and ladies, all my size, dressed up in their finest clothes, bowing to each other and acting in a courtly manner.

Soon afterwards the Queen gave the dwarf away to a lady of high rank, and to my great relief I never saw him again.

I kept the four stings. Much later, when I returned to England, I gave three of them to Gresham College. I kept the fourth for myself.

I would like to tell the reader a little about the countryside (я бы хотел немного рассказать читателю о местности) which surrounded the city I was living in (окружающей город, в котором я жил; in относится к the city). European geographers are quite wrong (европейские географы совершенно неправы) in thinking that there is no land mass between Japan and California (полагая, что между Японией и Калифорнией нет никакой земли).

I would like to tell the reader a little about the countryside which surrounded the city I was living in. I saw a good deal of it, since I always went with the King and Queen on their journeys and I often went into the city with Glumdalclitch.

As far as I could judge, Brobdingnag is about six thousand miles long and between three and five thousand miles wide. This vast mass of land must be joined to north-west America. European geographers are quite wrong in thinking that there is no land mass between Japan and California.

The country is a peninsula (страна /эта/ есть полуостров) surrounded on three sides by the ocean (окруженный с трех сторон океаном). There are very high mountains to the north (на севере расположены очень высокие горы). Nobody in the kingdom knows (никто в королевстве не знает) whether these mountains or the regions beyond them are inhabited (обитаемы ли эти горы или = и области за их пределами; to inhabit — жить, обитать; населять, заселять), since there are volcanoes in them (так как в них = в горах находятся вулканы).

There is no seaport in the kingdom (в королевстве нет ни одного морского порта), although a lot of ships and smaller boats sail the large rivers (несмотря на то, что по крупным рекам плавает множество кораблей и малых судов). The parts of the coast (/те/ части побережья) into which the rivers flow (в которые = куда текут реки = где реки впадают в море) are full of sharp and pointed rocks (полны = усеяны острыми скалами; sharp — острый; pointed — заостренный, остроконечный). These people therefore have no trade with the rest of the world (таким образом, эти люди не имеют торговых сношений с остальным миром).

There is a good deal of fine fishing in the rivers. The salt-water fish, however, are the same size as those in Europe and are considered too small to be worth catching. This is probably the only land area in the world where plants and animals of such extraordinary size are to be found. I leave it to the scholars to explain this fact.

The King of Brobdingnag, however, might well feel that I'd told too little about the size of his land. So perhaps I should also mention the most splendid sight I saw during my time there. That was the sight of the King's Guard. There were five hundred horses and riders, each horse between fifty-four and sixty feet high.

I would have been quite happy in Brobdingnag if I hadn't had so many accidents because of my tiny size. Several of these accidents happened in the Palace gardens.

One day, for instance, I was taking a walk on the grass when there came a sudden shower of hailstones.

Glumdalclitch and her teacher were some distance away (Глюмдалклич со своей гувернанткой находились в некотором отдалении). Glumdalclitch and her teacher were some distance away. The hailstones knocked me to the ground and I couldn't move. I felt as though someone was throwing tennis balls at me with great force. I got so many bruises all over my body that I had to stay in my bedroom box for ten days. A hailstone in that country weighs almost eighteen hundred times as much as a European one. I know this because I have measured hailstones in both places.

A more dangerous accident also happened to me in the Palace garden (в дворцовом саду со мной случилось и /другое/ более опасное приключение) when I was left by myself for a short time one day (когда однажды я был оставлен на короткое время один без присмотра: «с самим собой»). Fortunately, I hadn't been hurt in the least (по счастливой случайности, я совершенно не пострадал: «не был ранен ни в малейшей степени»). My clothes weren't even torn (даже моя одежда не была порвана; to tear). But Glumdalclitch, who had been looking for me (но Глюмдалклич, которая меня /уже/ искала), got a terrible shock (ужасно перепугалась; shock — удар, толчок; потрясение /от сильного испуга, удивления и т. п./; шок). The Queen was never told (королеве не стали ничего рассказывать). I hated being there, sitting on the dressing table while they changed their clothes. They didn't mind in the least stripping to the skin while I was present. It felt very strange to be treated like this, as if I were a kitten or an insect that happened to be in the same room. For me, it was very far from being a pleasant sight. In fact it was a horrible sight. Their skin was so coarse and rough. To be close to a mole, a vast black thing with hairs as long as ropes, was something that disgusted me. To tell the truth, the smell that came from their skins also disgusted me.

I remember a friend of mine in Lilliput telling me one day when I had taken a lot of exercise (помню, как однажды, после того как я много занимался физическими упражнениями, один мой друг в Лилипутии сказал; exercise — упражнение, тренировка; физическая зарядка, моцион, прогулки и. т. п.) that I had a strong smell (что от меня исходит сильный запах). The greatest danger I was ever placed in during my stay in that country came about while I was sitting quietly in my bedroom box one day. I had my door and windows open since it was a very warm day. My box had been placed in Glumdalclitch's room while she was off somewhere. She had locked her door, but left her window open. I became aware of a noise at her window. Something was skipping about from one side to the other. Looking out my own window, I froze with fright when I saw that it was a monkey. This monkey belonged to one of the workers in the Palace kitchen.

The animal jumped into Glumdalclitch's room (животное заскочило в комнату Глюмдалклич) and began leaping up and down (и начало повсюду прыгать; up and down — вверх и вниз; взад и вперед; там и сям; повсюду, везде) and playing with her things (и играть с ее вещами). He peeped in my windows, grinning and chattering all the time. He soon caught sight of me. If only I had kept a cool head, I could have hidden under my bed. He put his paw in through my door. I tried to move along the wall and reach the far corner of my room. But he caught my coat and dragged me out.

Why should people be so anxious to become a member of this House when they got no payment for their job? Didn't I think they would try to act so as to be sure that their own money was carefully preserved? I cannot and will not repeat all the questions the King put to me on this point.

He had just as many questions about the Courts of Justice (столько же много = не меньше вопросов имел он /и/ касательно судов). He had just as many questions about the Courts of Justice. He wanted to know whether the lawyers and judges who upheld the laws of the land had any part in making these laws, whether they were rich or poor, were paid for giving their opinion and whether they could ever become members of the House of Commons.

I had said that five or six million were collected in taxes by the Treasury every year. But when the different items I had mentioned were added together, the Treasury seemed to pay expenses that were the double of that amount. From whom did we borrow the money? And where did we find money to pay it back? He couldn't understand why we went to war so often when it cost so much money.

His Majesty was completely amazed by what I had told him of our history over the last hundred years. It seemed to him that we were a people who fight, kill and hate more than he had thought possible and were more cruel and greedy than he could have imagined.

The next time we spoke together (во время нашей следующей беседы: «следующий раз /когда/ мы разговаривали друг с другом») His Majesty repeated his thoughts (его величество повторил = еще раз изложил свои мысли) about all I had told him (по поводу всего, что я ему рассказал). The next time we spoke together His Majesty repeated his thoughts about all I had told him. I will never forget his words nor the way he spoke to me. He lifted me onto his hand and said, "My little friend Grildrig, you have made the most wonderful speeches about your country and it is clear that you love it very much indeed. You have spent so much of your life travelling, perhaps you have escaped many of the vices of your own people. From all the answers you have given me to my questions, I have the opinion that your people are the most horrible little insects that crawl upon the surface of this earth."

This part of my story is so painful to me that I would not have told it at all, if I weren't so fond of truth. I had answered all the King's questions as well as I could. I tried so hard with every answer I gave to present my country in a favourable light. Yet I failed to give the King of Brobdingnag any understanding of our ways of thinking.

However, a King who is so completely cut off from the rest of the world (однако = но, конечно, король, который совершенно отрезан от остального мира) will always think in a narrow-minded way (всегда будет мыслить узко/необъективно; mind — разум; мышление; narrow mind — узколобость; узость ума/мышления). I told him that we have a special powder in Europe and other parts of the world. When the tiniest spark of fire touches a small heap of this powder it catches fire and explodes into the air as though it is as big as a mountain, making a noise like thunder. I also told him that a small heap of powder can be put into a tube of brass or iron, from which it can drive a ball of lead with such speed that nothing can stand in its way. The largest of these balls can sink a ship, destroy a town or wipe out whole ranks of soldiers.

I told the King that I knew how to make this powder (я сказал королю, что знаю, как изготовить этот порошок) and that it didn't cost much money (и что это стоит недорого). I could also make the drawings (я также могу сделать чертежи) from which his workmen could make the tubes (по которым его мастера смогут изготовить стволы). I offered all this valuable knowledge to the King of Brobdingnag (все эти ценные знания/сведения я предложил королю Бробдингнага; value — ценность; важность; полезность) in return for the kindness he had shown me (в благодарность за доброту, какую он проявлял в отношении меня; return — возвращение; отдача, возврат; возмещение).

The King was struck with amazement and horror at the very idea (король пришел в изумление и ужас: «был поражен/охвачен изумлением и ужасом» от самой = при одной мысли /об этом/; to strike — ударять, бить; поражать; сражать). How could I stand there (как я могу стоять здесь) describing scenes of blood (описывая = и описывать сцены кровопролития; blood — кровь; кровопролитие, убийство), death and waste (смерти и опустошения), as though I were doing him a favour (как будто я оказываю ему любезность; favour — благосклонность, расположение; любезность, услуга, одолжение)! (These were his very words (это его подлинные слова).) He would prefer to lose half his kingdom (он /заявил, что/ предпочел бы потерять половину своего королевства) than be given such a secret (чем быть посвященным в тайну /этого изобретения/).

I told the King that I knew how to make this powder and that it didn't cost much money. I could also make the drawings from which his workmen could make the tubes. I offered all this valuable knowledge to the King of Brobdingnag in return for the kindness he had shown me.

The King was struck with amazement and horror at the very idea. How could I stand there describing scenes of blood, death and waste, as though I were doing him a favour! (These were his very words.) He would prefer to lose half his kingdom than be given such a secret.

This is the same King (/и/ это тот самый король) who is considered by his own people to be learned and wise (который считается своим народом = которого народ считает ученым и мудрым). He is admired and loved in Brobdingnag (в Бробдингнаге к нему относятся с восхищением и любовью; to admire — восхищаться, восторгаться; любоваться). This is the same King who is considered by his own people to be learned and wise. He is admired and loved in Brobdingnag. Yet, as will be clear to the reader, this same man is so shortsighted in his understanding of the world, he couldn't grasp the chance I was offering him.

It would have made him the master of the lives and fortunes of all his people. But his education is unfortunately so poor that he couldn't see that at all.

The King wasn't impressed either on hearing of the number of books that are written in my country on the art of politics. I told him about this one day. In this way I was able to read something of the history of the country. I had begun to wonder after my conversations with the King why he kept an army at all. At different points in time the noble lords had wanted more power, the people had wanted their freedom and the King had wanted to keep all the power himself. War had broken out among them.

There had not been any trouble of that kind since the time of the present King's grandfather. But an army was still kept all the same. I have never seen anything more magnificent than the sight of this army, mounted on horseback. At the word of command, they would draw their swords and hold them up. One soldier on a large horse stood ninety feet tall. I don't know how many horses there were all together. But when the soldiers flashed their swords it looked as though ten thousand flashes of lightning were darting at the same time from every part of the sky.

I had never given up hope (я никогда не оставлял надежду) of regaining my freedom (возвратить себе свободу) and being able to return to my own country (и иметь возможность вернуться на родину). I would sooner have died than have this happen. I had no wish to bring up children to be kept in cages like pet birds. I was the favourite of a great King and Queen and my own life at Court was pleasant enough. But it was not a life that I would wish children to have.

I often thought of my family in England. I hoped very much to see them again. I also wanted to talk to people again who were my equals. Imagine being able to walk in the streets or fields again without fear of being stepped on like a small frog or a puppy.

Glumdalclitch and I accompanied the King and Queen (сопровождали короля и королеву) on a journey to the south coast of the kingdom (в /их/ путешествии к южному побережью королевства). That was at the beginning of the third year of my stay in that country (это было в начале третьего года моего пребывания в той стране).

Glumdalclitch and I accompanied the King and Queen on a journey to the south coast of the kingdom. That was at the beginning of the third year of my stay in that country.

I pretended to be rather more ill than I really was and then I asked if I might be allowed the pleasure of fresh sea air. One of the young servants, who had sometimes looked after me before, was told to take me down to the sea.

There were some bumps and then suddenly I felt myself falling straight down. I almost lost my breath. There was a terrible splash. Then I was in the dark for a minute. The box began to rise again. I could see light at the tops of my windows.

I could hear footsteps on the roof (я услышал шаги на крыше). He had sent some sailors off in a small boat and they had come back claiming that there was a house floating in the sea. He had returned with the sailors in the small boat and towed the box back to his ship.

When I explained that I was feeling very well indeed, he grew serious at once. What law had I broken, he wished to know, that some prince or other had sent me to sea in a box and without any food.

The captain looked on while I took the key from my pocket and unlocked my cupboard. I showed him the comb I had made from the stumps of the King's beard. There was another I had made using a paring from the Queen's thumbnail as the back of the comb. I still had some combings of the Queen's hair and some of Glumdalclitch's needles that were a foot or more long. I also showed him the four wasp stings and a large gold ring the Queen had given me. She had taken it from her little finger one day and thrown it over my head like a collar.
