The people are well educated, but their manner of writing is very peculiar. It is neither from left to right like the Europeans, nor right to left like the Arabs. Nor is it from top to bottom like the Chinese. It is from one corner of the paper to the other, like ladies in England.

They bury their dead head downwards (они хоронят умерших /кладя тело/ головою вниз). They believe that in a thousand years time the dead will rise again (они верят, что через тысячу лет мертвые воскреснут; to rise — восходить, вставать, подниматься; воскресать). There are some very peculiar laws and customs in this Empire. It's not surprising that a person is put on trial when he or she is accused of breaking the law. However, if the person is found innocent, the accuser is immediately put to death, and the accused person is generously compensated out of the accuser's goods and land for the hardship they have suffered. The Emperor also gives the innocent person some public mark of favour and declares his innocence throughout the city.

The people of Lilliput believe that good government is based on reward and punishment. Anyone who can prove that he has kept the laws of the country for six years can claim certain privileges and a sum of money from a special fund. They thought it was wrong that our laws were enforced by punishment only, without any mention of reward.

In choosing people for employment, they care more about morals than ability. They are kept busy at all times, apart from short periods for eating and sleeping and two hours of physical exercise.

They learn some rules for domestic life, and they are taught that a wife should always be a reasonable and agreeable companion, since she cannot always be young. When the girls are twelve years old, which is the age at which they may marry, they are taken home.

It may amuse the curious reader to know a little about my household arrangements during my nine months and thirteen days in this country. I had a table and chair made for me out of the largest trees in the royal park. Two hundred seamstresses were employed to make me shirts, sheets and table linen, all of the strongest kind they could get.

I lay on the ground to be measured (я лег на землю, чтобы меня измерили). I lay on the ground to be measured. One person stood at my neck, and another at my knees, each holding a strong thread. A third person measured the thread with a ruler one inch long. Then they measured my right thumb, for they calculated that twice around the thumb is once around the wrist, the same applying to the neck and waist. And with the help of my old shirt, which they used as a pattern, they fitted me exactly.

Three hundred tailors were employed to make my clothes (триста портных были призваны для того, чтобы сшить мне одежду/костюм). They had another way of measuring (у них был другой способ измерения). I had three hundred cooks to prepare my food (у меня было = мне выделили триста поваров, чтобы готовить = они готовили мою = мне пищу). They lived with their families in huts built around my house (они жили с семьями в домиках/бараках, построенных вокруг моего дома; hut — лачуга, хибара, хижина; барак). I had three hundred cooks to prepare my food. They lived with their families in huts built around my house. At meal times I took twenty waiters in my hand and placed them on the table. A hundred more waited below on the ground with dishes of meat and barrels of wine. The waiters above pulled up the food, as we would pull up a bucket from a well. A dish of their meat was a good mouthful and so was a barrel of their liquor. Their mutton is not as good as ours, but their beef is excellent. I usually ate a goose or turkey in one mouthful and, I must confess, they tasted far better than ours.

One day His Imperial Majesty requested (однажды его императорское величество изъявил желание) that he and his Consort might have the pleasure of dining with me (чтобы он и его супруга могли иметь удовольствие отобедать со мною; to request — просить, обращаться с просьбой, вежливым требованием). Flimnap, the Lord High Treasurer, was there too. I noticed that he often looked at me in an unpleasant way. I have reason to believe that this visit from his Majesty gave Flimnap an opportunity of saying bad things about me to his master.

Flimnap had always been my secret enemy (всегда был тайным моим врагом). He told the Emperor that his Treasury was poor (он сказал императору, что казна находится в плохом состоянии: «бедна») and that I had cost them over a million and a half sprugs (и что я стоил им = мое содержание обошлось им более чем в полтора миллиона спругов) — their greatest gold coin (их самая крупная золотая монета). Flimnap had always been my secret enemy. He told the Emperor that his Treasury was poor and that I had cost them over a million and a half sprugs (their greatest gold coin). He advised the Emperor to get rid of me as soon as possible.

I am here obliged to save the reputation of an excellent lady. Flimnap, the Treasurer, was jealous. He had heard some evil gossip about his wife being extremely fond of me, and that she was supposed to have once come privately to my home. This, I declare to be untrue. Her Grace treated me as a friend. She often came to my house, but always with three other people in her coach, as did many other ladies of the Court.

This is only important because the reputation of a great lady is at stake — to say nothing of my own reputation.

This scandal was the reason that the Treasurer looked at his wife in such an unpleasant manner, and looked at me even more unpleasantly. Although he was finally reconciled with her, he still didn't believe me. I also found that the Emperor, who was strongly influenced by his favourite Minister, was also losing interest in me.

Before I tell you how I left the Kingdom of Lilliput, I would like to tell you about a secret plot that had been made against me.

I had never known much about life at Court. It had played no part in my life up to now. Of course I had heard and read about princes and ministers, but I had never expected to find that I, myself, was part of an intrigue at Court or that this would take place in such a far-off country, with rules that are so different from those in Europe.

I was preparing for my visit to the Emperor of Blefuscu when an important person at Court came, very privately, to my house one night.

He said that several private Council meetings about me had been held recently. His Majesty had come to a decision two days ago.

He told me that Skyresh Bolgolam — the High Admiral (он = мой гость сообщил мне, что Скайреш Болголам, верховный адмирал) — had been my enemy since I arrived (со дня моего прибытия: «с тех пор, как я прибыл» стал моим врагом). His hatred had increased since my great success against Blefuscu (его ненависть усилилась после моей великой победы над Блефуску; success — успех, достижение; against — против). Out of gratitude for certain favours (из благодарности за определенные услуги /оказанные ему мною/; favour — расположение; благосклонность; любезность, услуга, одолжение), this person from the Court gave me information about these meetings (этот придворный = мой гость снабдил меня /подробными/ сведениями об этих заседаниях) and a copy of these articles (и копией этого акта). Along with Flimnap, the High Treasurer, and some other Ministers, he had prepared articles of impeachment against me for treason and other crimes.

Out of gratitude for certain favours, this person from the Court gave me information about these meetings and a copy of these articles. The articles were as follows:

Flestrin asked to be excused from this service, as he was unwilling to destroy the liberty and lives of innocent people. He is therefore a traitor against His Most Imperial Majesty.

Article 3:

There were some other articles, but these are the most important ones. During the debates about my impeachment, the Treasurer and Admiral had wanted me to be put to death in a painful manner. They wanted to set fire to my house at night, then shoot me with poisoned arrows. Most of the Ministers were against me, but His Majesty wanted to treat me more kindly and to spare my life.

The Emperor had asked for the opinion of Reldresal, Principal Secretary for Private Affairs (император спросил мнение Релдресела, главного секретаря по тайным делам), who had always been my friend (который всегда был моим другом). The Emperor had asked for the opinion of Reldresal, Principal Secretary for Private Affairs, who had always been my friend. Reldresal made it clear that because of my good work, and his belief that an Emperor should show mercy, he would prefer to let me live.

The punishment he suggested was (наказание, которое он предложил, состояло в том) that both my eyes should be put out (чтобы выколоть мне оба глаза: «что должны быть выколоты…»; to put out — выставлять; выгонять; устранять; погасить). The punishment he suggested was that both my eyes should be put out. In that way, the Emperor would be seen as merciful, and the loss of my eyes would not put an end to my physical strength. He pointed out that my strength might still be useful to His Majesty. Reldresal thought it would be enough for me to see through the eyes of the Ministers, since that is what the greatest princes do.

Many did not agree with this suggestion (многие не согласились с этим предложением). The Admiral, Bolgolam, was very angry (был очень разгневан). And if I was able to put out a fire in her Majesty's apartment, I might, at another time, drown the whole palace. I might use my strength to return the enemy's fleet. He had good reason to think I was a Big-Endian at heart. And, since treason begins in the heart, he believed that I should be put to death.

He said that my guilt was enough to condemn me to death. But His Imperial Majesty was opposed to having me executed. Since the Council thought that the loss of my eyes was too soft a punishment, I must be punished some other way.

After my death, five or six thousand of his Majesty's subjects could cut my flesh from my bones, take it away in cartloads and bury it far away, leaving my skeleton as a monument.

It was agreed that the idea of slowly starving me should be kept a secret, but the punishment of taking away my eyesight would be made known. In three days, the Secretary would be directed to come to my house and read the Articles of Impeachment.

He would then tell me of the great mercy and favour of His Majesty and Council (тогда он поведает мне о великой милости и благосклонности его величества и совета) because I was only to lose my eyes (ибо я был приговорен только к ослеплению: «должен был только лишь потерять глаза»). It was the custom that when punishment had been decided upon, the Emperor made a speech telling of his great mercy and kindness. The people were afraid of such speeches. They knew that the more talk there was of mercy, the more terrible was the punishment and the more innocent the sufferer.

I decided to visit the Emperor of Blefuscu. I sent a letter to my friend, the Secretary, informing him of my plan to set out that morning for Blefuscu. After all, I had been given permission to do so.

Without waiting for an answer (не дожидаясь ответа), I went to the side of the island where the fleet was (я направился в /ту/ часть острова, где стоял флот). This he was pleased to do.

I would gladly have taken a dozen people, but His Majesty wouldn't allow it.

PART 2

A VOYAGE TO BROBDINGNAG

The Captain, John Nicholas, decided that we should spend some months there. It was the end of March before we set sail again. Once again all went well until we ran into heavy winds on April 19th. Violent gales began to blow as we sailed north of Madagascar. They continued for twenty days, forcing us to the east. We were east of the Molucca Islands before we ran into calmer weather on May 2nd.

Our ship was undamaged, the sailors were in good health and we had enough food, but we had very little water. The wind was still blowing hard from the south-west. The captain decided to continue sailing towards the east, keeping a look-out for land.

It was June 16th before land was sighted and on the following day we saw quite clearly that it covered a large area. The captain decided to anchor the Adventure about a league from a narrow strip of land jutting out into the sea. Twelve sailors were sent off in a small boat to go ashore. They were given bottles for fresh water, if any could be found. I asked permission to go with them. I wanted to see what I could of the country while they were searching for water.

I was just going to call to them, even though they would hardly have been able to hear me, when I saw a huge creature wading into the sea. He was chasing the sailors as fast as he could.

I could see a good deal of the countryside from the top of the hill. There were a lot of fields and a number of different crops. But it was the length of the grass that surprised me most. It was more than twenty feet high. I began to walk along what seemed to be a main road.

As soon as I began walking down this road I could no longer see the countryside on either side of me. Corn grew on both sides to a height of at least forty feet. It took me an hour to walk past the corn, after which I came to a hedge and some very tall trees. There was a stile in the hedge. The trees were so tall that I was quite unable to guess their height. The hedge seemed to be at least one hundred and twenty feet high.

Suddenly I saw a monster on the far side of the hedge coming towards the stile. He was the same size as the one I had seen in the sea chasing our boat. I have never in my life been so frightened. I ran back and hid in the corn. This monster was a man, as tall as a church spire.

Each of them carried a reaping-hook. The hook was about six times the length of a scythe. As soon as I saw that the farm workers were moving towards the corn and starting to reap, I began moving backwards.

Some of the stalks were not more than a foot apart and I found it very difficult to squeeze between them. I kept going until I could go no further. I had reached a part of the field where the wind and rain had flattened the corn to the ground. I tried to creep through, but it was quite impossible. I could hear the monsters cutting through the corn not more than a hundred yards behind me.

I lay on the ground (я лег на землю), wishing that I would die (желая умереть) before they reached me (до того, как они доберутся до меня). I lay on the ground, wishing that I would die before they reached me. I thought of my wife and children and of all the friends and relations who had advised me not to go to sea again. I also thought of the time I had spent in Lilliput. How strange it was that I seemed to be as small a person in this land as a person from Lilliput would be among us. Suddenly one of the workers came so close that one more step would squash me to death under his foot.

I screamed as loudly as I could (я завопил так громко, как /только/ мог). Perhaps he thought that I was a small dangerous animal. He reached down and lifted me from behind, between his thumb and finger. My sides hurt from the pressure of his fingers but I tried to keep still, so as not to frighten him as he peered at me. I was afraid that he might throw me to the ground, about sixty feet below, if he didn't like the look of me.

I placed my hands together and said some words in a low voice. When this seemed to please him I groaned a little and moved my head towards my sides, hoping to let him know how much he was hurting me. He seemed to understand, and put me gently into his pocket and ran back down the field.

The next thing I knew, I was being held in the hands of the farmer that I had first seen standing on the stile. He blew my hair away from my face in order to see me more clearly. He poked at my clothes with a stalk of corn. I think he was trying to see whether my clothes were a kind of skin that grew on me. The other workers stood around looking at me closely. At last he put me down on the ground. I began to walk slowly backwards and forwards so they would know I was not going to run away.

The journey took about a half an hour and it was the most uncomfortable journey I've ever made. The horse rose high into the air as it trotted along. It felt like the rising and falling of a ship during a great storm at sea, except that it happened much more quickly. I was very badly shaken when we reached the town.

More and more people began to turn up at the farmer's house, asking to see me. There was room for thirty people in the largest room and the farmer asked for the amount of money that thirty people would pay, even when the show was put on for a single family.

Soon I had to do my tricks many times a day every day of the week, except Wednesdays. Wednesday is the Sabbath in Brobdingnag. We continued to ride into town on market-days. When I had been with the family for about two months, I was told that the farmer was planning to take me to the biggest city in the land, Lorbrulgrud.

We set out on this journey of three thousand miles on August 17th, 1703 (мы отправились в это путешествие /длиною/ в три тысячи миль 17 августа 1703 года).
